Treatment options

There is not one single treatment that when used alone can control your pet’s allergies for life.   This is because allergic skin disease is very complex with lots of factors involved in the disease process and because of this a lot of patients are usually taking more than one type of medication to help control the itching and redness.

Steroids

These are very effective at controlling the symptoms with the vast majority of animals having a good quality of life when taking them.  Steroids are often misinterpreted to be medicines that can cause great harm, but when they are used in medicinal forms and at therapeutic doses, they are generally safe, well tolerated and work quickly to help resolve your pet’s discomfort.

Long term treatment with steroids involves giving the lowest dose possible, every two days, to control the symptoms. A blood test is advised every few months to help monitor your pet’s blood count, liver and kidney function. Many people worry about the short and long term side effects of steroids. These are usually eating a lot and drinking excessively, weight gain.

We would be happy to discuss the other side effects with you during a live teleconsultation

Shampoo and Mousse Therapy

Shampoos are an additional part of the treatment program mainly in dogs. They help to wash off any allergens that come into contact with the skin and coat.  They are also antibacterial and antifungal.  Dogs with allergies also have a very dry coat and thin skin layer and shampoo therapy can help moisturise the skin as well as be protective.

In some instances, shampooing may not be possible, and on these occasions, you may wish to consider foam products as they will not involve bathing your pet.
